"Cliff illusion" next to the Eiffel Tower

24/05/2021

The giant 3D installation by famous French artist JR (Jean Rene) is right next to the tourist icon of Paris - the Eiffel Tower. This is considered a preparation step for the tower's plan to reopen to visitors in mid-July.

The massive black and white 3D painting is located in the Esplanade du Trocadero, right across from the Eiffel Tower. The work will be on display until June 17, and is currently attracting a long line of people waiting to take their turn to take photos. Visitors are creating different poses with the painting to create the feeling of jumping over a deep abyss or over the edge of a ravine.

Previously, in April 2019, JR caused a stir in Paris when he created a "surreal" installation that made the Louvre tower appear to rise from the ground. Artist JR's reputation rose thanks to large-scale portrait paintings on the facades of large buildings around the world such as the Nairobi slums (Kenya) or Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)...

The artist's latest work at the Eiffel Tower comes in preparation for the tourist icon's return in mid-July after months of closure due to the pandemic.

Visitors can buy tickets online from June 1 and visit starting July 16. To ensure the safety of visitors, health protection procedures and Covid-19 prevention are still fully implemented. According to the French newspaper RFI, the number of visitors to the tower will be limited to 10,000 per day to ensure social distancing.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tower had to close to visitors since the end of 2020 to minimize the spread of the disease due to large gatherings. Initially, the tower was expected to reopen in December, but conditions were not yet guaranteed. On average, the Eiffel Tower welcomes about 7 million visitors each year, of which 3/4 are foreign visitors.
