Ascott and CapitaLand are implementing Earth Hour across more than 280 buildings.

27/03/2018

CapitaLand launched its Earth Hour campaign across more than 20 countries and in over 280 of its buildings, including 35 in Singapore, in support of Singapore's Year of Climate Action. To encourage community action in environmental protection, CapitaLand Group engaged in practical activities, connecting millions of customers to participate.

CapitaLand's flagship projects, such as Raffles City Singapore, ION Orchard, CapitaGreen, Ascott Raffles Place Singapore, Suzhou Center Mall, and Raffles City Hangzhou, all participated in Earth Hour on March 24, 2018, at 8:30 PM local time, by simultaneously switching off facade lights and other non-essential lighting.

Mr. Tan Seng Chai, Chief Human Resources Officer and Chairman of CapitaLand's Sustainable Development Committee, said: “We are working together towards the goal of making the city a global living environment. Focusing on sustainable development allows us to make timely efforts in future products. Climate change events require us to prepare for future climate challenges, while we still need to achieve economic, environmental and social growth for the community as a whole. As a responsible developer, CapitaLand participates in Earth Hour every year, since the campaign's inception in Singapore in 2008.”

Last year's Earth Hour campaign was a great success when CapitaLand popularized an online quiz for mobile users downloading the CapitaStar app. This year, the CapitaLand Earth Hour quiz allows members to earn more reward points, with a new quiz each day, encouraging players to learn about climate change and take small but practical actions to reduce plastic, carbon, and water consumption.

Mr. Tan Seng Chai added: “As CapitaLand Group creates the real estate industry for the future, we are aware of the need for sustainable development in design and construction solutions. We have proactive initiatives to encourage and provide knowledge to our stakeholders – shoppers in our complexes, tenants, residents in our residential and serviced apartment projects, partners, and other stakeholders. Everyone is actively working together to protect the environment. Through the activities we organized in our buildings during Earth Hour 2018, we connected the community to fight climate change together. We also have activities on the internet to connect with the younger generation.”

CapitaLand buildings worldwide are simultaneously hosting activities such as environmental quizzes, recycling initiatives, cycling, tree planting, candlelit dinners, and environmental film screenings… All activities connect communities and encourage collective action.

In Vietnam, CapitaLand and Ascott, a subsidiary of CapitaLand Group, organized several weeks of green activities to support Earth Hour. Over 1,000 employees and residents of the company's buildings participated in cycling and energy saving initiatives. They decorated Green Corners using recycled materials, organized Green Fairs, planted trees in protected forests, and cycled through the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. All activities involved the collective participation of employees, residents, tenants, partners, and others, all conveying a message of environmental protection.

This is the 11th year that CapitaLand and Ascott have supported Earth Hour, connecting a community of individuals and businesses to take small but impactful actions to improve the situation of climate change. In addition to participating in global activities, this year Ascott also received an award for its environmental protection efforts from the Singapore Ministry of Construction (BCA), a department under Singapore's Ministry of National Development, for environmentally friendly construction. This year, Ascott's environmental award also included Somerset Ho Chi Minh City, one of the Group's serviced apartment buildings in Vietnam, which received the BCA Green Mark GoldPLUS award. The internationally prestigious BCA Green Mark certification is a global benchmark for environmentally friendly design and construction. Somerset Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam,'s achievement affirms the Group's commitment to operating in a spirit of combining economic development, environmental protection, and social responsibility.
