Australia faces a record-breaking hot winter day, reaching 41.6 degrees Celsius.

An unusual heatwave has gripped parts of Australia's northwest coast, with temperatures soaring to record highs, nearly matching the sweltering heat of summer.

Specifically, the temperature recorded at a military training facility in Yampi Sound "broke" the previous record of 41.2 degrees Celsius, set in August 2020 at nearby West Roebuck. According to the agency, this temperature is the highest ever recorded for August at any location in Australia, and also sets a new record for the temperature of any winter month across the country.

Winter in Australia typically lasts from early June to the end of August. However, scientists note that the aforementioned record temperature is only "provisionally confirmed" and further verification is needed to ensure this figure is an accurate measurement before it can be officially recorded.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Meteorology said this was “the highest temperature in August anywhere in Australia” and “the highest temperature across Australia for any winter month.”

Approximately 18% of Australia's land area is desert, and scorching temperatures are common year-round in areas far from temperate zones. Australia's climate is heavily influenced by three cyclical climate patterns: the Indian Ocean temperature variation; the variation in the wind belt moving between Australia and Antarctica known as the Southern Belt Regime; and the variation in Pacific weather patterns known as El Niño and La Niña.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology believes that “the combination of these major climate impacts with global warming” contributed to making the 2023 winter the hottest on record in the country's history. Climate scientists have predicted that 2024 could be the hottest year on Earth ever.

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Monitoring Service (C3S) reports that global temperatures in the first seven months of this year were 0.7 degrees Celsius higher than the average for the period from 1991-2020. Scientific studies warn that rising greenhouse gas emissions are accelerating global warming.

Temperatures have hit record highs globally in recent decades as human-caused carbon emissions continue to rise. In just the past few weeks, several record highs have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, the Svalbard archipelago in Norway's Arctic, and Kyiv, Ukraine.
