The Tonnerre is a multi-purpose command and landing ship. It is one of the largest ships in the French Republic Navy and this year carries approximately 200 officer cadets from the French Navy and other navies. The ship functions as a maritime command center, helicopter carrier, hospital ship, and landing ship for military forces by air or sea. It also serves as a troop and equipment transport ship.
The visit of this flagship warship takes place ahead of the visit by the Minister of Defence in June and by the President of the French Republic in the fall this year. The ship's visit is a new and strong expression of the growing goodwill and cooperation between the two militaries and governments of Vietnam and France.
During the visit, the crew will participate in various activities and meetings with Vietnamese authorities at all levels, thereby striving to further strengthen the friendly and defense relations between France and Vietnam.
