President François Hollande's visit to Vietnam

01/09/2016

The President of the French Republic, François Hollande, will visit Vietnam from September 5th to 7th. He is not the first French president to visit Vietnam: in 1993, former President François Mitterrand visited Vietnam, becoming the first Western president to visit Vietnam after 1975; former President Jacques Chirac also visited in 1997 and 2004.

In addition, there have been numerous other bilateral visits between France and Vietnam at the ministerial, parliamentary, and local levels, highlighting the richness of the relationship between the two countries. In 2016 alone, the President of the French National Assembly, Claude Bartolone, and the French Minister of Defence, Jean-Yves le Drian, visited Vietnam. In December 2015, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was also present in Paris to attend the COP 21 climate conference, and the French government was very appreciative of Vietnam's commitment on this occasion.

President François Hollande's state visit is an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations within the framework of the strategic cooperation agreement signed in September 2013. New agreements will be signed and meetings between business leaders will take place, and cooperation between the two countries will continue to develop.
