Brazilian music night

14/04/2014

South American music integrated most strongly into the mainstream of world classical music during the 20th century. With its distinctive musical elements such as Latin, tango, and jazz, South American music has acquired a unique identity that is completely different from the classical music of any European country.

Prominent names with extremely free-spirited and creative styles, such as Villa-Lobos (Brazil) and Astor Piazzolla (Argentina), have become known all over the world.

The "Brazilian Music Night" program featured the renowned Brazilian conductor Jean Reis, who founded and conducted dozens of music festivals in Brazil. The program exuded a vibrant and captivating atmosphere with its Latin rhythms. One of the delightful surprises was the overture from Antonio Carlos Gomes' opera The Guarany. Gomes is the only composer outside of Europe to have achieved such a prominent position in opera during the peak of operatic art, a time when renowned opera composers like Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini were prominent figures.

The program will feature the Brazilian Symphony by 20th-century Brazilian composer Arthur Barbosa, a unique symphony with a rather free structure and strong Latin rhythmic influences. It also showcases romantic qualities with incredibly sweet melodies and dreamy harmonies influenced by blues music.

In the "Bazil Music Night," the audience will enjoy a performance by clarinetist Nguyen Tuan Loc and violaist Bui Anh Son of the Concerto for Clarinet and Viola, Op. 88, by the German Romantic composer Max Bruch. This is one of the works with many unique sonic influences, exploiting and combining the timbres and techniques of the clarinet and viola. These two instruments have similar ranges and distinct characteristics, yet they blend together to create a rather interesting new sound. Both instruments possess flexible techniques and are very well suited to the beautiful, romantic melodies in Max Bruch's work.

The program promises vibrant, colorful moments from the rhythmic music and captivating dances of Brazilian music, while the romantic and sophisticated atmosphere created by the sounds of solo instruments will also be a very special highlight.

The program took place at 8 PM on April 19, 2014 at:

  • City Theatre
