the restaurant's origins

The Labassin at Villa Escudero is not a natural waterfall. It is a dam built in 1929 as part of a plan by politician Don Arsenio. The dam's purpose was to retain water for irrigating the surrounding coconut plantations. It wasn't until 1981 that the Villa Escudero plantation was opened to the public as a tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the plantation's history. The Don Arsenio family's private collections are displayed as a museum for visitors to explore.
