After 1954, the Dong Nai region in general, and Bien Hoa city in particular, had a large concentration of Catholics. Although there are no official statistics on the total number of parishioners, visitors passing through the area can clearly feel the Catholic spirit through the dense presence of churches and chapels.
As someone passionate about architecture and religious history, and accepting an invitation from a friend, Thinh traveled to Bien Hoa to learn about some of the prominent churches there.
Hoa Binh Parish Church (Bien Hoa, Dong Nai)
Hoa Binh Parish was established in August 1955 in Ho Nai, Bien Hoa. The first church was built in an old wooden warehouse. The main church has also been rebuilt several times. After four constructions, the last one in 2006 resulted in a spacious and modern church. The most striking and attractive feature of this church is its blend of Asian and European styles.
The soaring dome of the Peace Church.

The church is a place where Asian and European architectural styles intersect.
The soaring arches and red brickwork, symbols of Eastern architecture and culture, give us the feeling of being in the space of a temple or shrine. Eastern culture is also clearly expressed through the carvings and decorations within the church grounds. However, amidst this Eastern setting, it is a place where Catholics express their absolute faith and love for God and the Virgin Mary.
The Peace Church has undergone several renovations, the last one in 2006. It serves as a place of worship for nearly 8,000 parishioners in the area.
The highlight of the complex is a nine-story bell tower. In Eastern philosophy, the number nine symbolizes good fortune and abundance. A cross sits atop the tower, marking the highest point of the entire area. What could be a more beautiful blend of elements!
The bell tower is a symbol of the building.
The weight of the structure is supported by rows of sturdy columns, another important element of ancient East Asian architecture.

The clash of cultures always creates shockwaves, and even tremors.
Dong Vinh Parish Church (Trang Bom, Dong Nai)
Dong Vinh Church was inaugurated in May 2018, after six years of construction. Although the church grounds are not very spacious, its European architectural style, the use of magma as the main building material, the bold decorative lines, and the arched windows give the structure a majestic yet somewhat dreamlike appearance.
Construction began in 2012, and the Dong Vinh stone church was inaugurated after six years of construction, measuring 55 meters in length and 24 meters in width. To visit the church, you will have to venture deep into narrow alleys, and the best way to avoid getting lost is to ask a local for directions. The church is located deep within a residential area, which is home to many woodworking workshops.
Seen from afar, the predominantly dark gray color of the towering stone blocks makes the parish church appear magnificent and splendid.
Locals call this place "the most beautiful stone church in Bien Hoa." That alone should say a lot.

Because it was built entirely of igneous rock, the locals also liken it to a "fortress" or "castle".
This is probably one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the southern region.
