Kayaking activities in Ha Long Bay suspended

29/03/2017

On March 29, Ha Long City issued document No. 2195/UBND on stopping all kayaking services in Ha Long Bay from April 1, 2017.

According to the explanation of Ha Long City: The number of kayaks and activities on Ha Long Bay exploited by overnight cruise ships is currently growing rapidly, while organizations and individuals operating this service do not have an approved operating plan.

Also according to the local management, the kayaking service business organization does not list prices or does not follow the listed prices, showing signs of "ripping off" tourists, affecting the tourism business environment in the bay. In addition, another reason given citing Notice No. 31/TB-UBND of Quang Ninh province is that boat owners do not arbitrarily operate kayaks, leading to the possibility of reducing the number of permanent crew members on board...

However, a representative of a company with many overnight cruise ships operating kayaking services on Ha Long Bay - responded: This is a very interesting type of discovery and experience tourism and is always attractive to foreign tourists, and at the same time quite safe. "The above ban makes it difficult for our company to provide diverse products and services to tourists staying on the bay, other than each time boarding a boat to sightsee, visit caves and then go to sleep" - said the representative of this company.

After a series of incidents of ship fires and self-sinking ships that have occurred since the beginning of the year, causing concerns about the safety of tourists visiting and staying overnight in Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long, Ha Long City has resolutely "banned" and removed many old, converted tourist ships that pose many potential dangers, affecting the lives of tourists and the tourism image of Ha Long Bay.
