29/09/2015

In its second week of release, Everest – a film featuring realistic snow-capped mountain scenes directed by Baltasar Kormakur – continued its strong performance at the box office with $96.8 million worldwide (as of September 27th).

In addition, Film Journal International, a magazine with 81 years of history, once ranked Everest second on its list of recommended films to watch that week.

Starting September 25th, this film, based on the true story of the devastating blizzard that struck Mount Everest in 1996, officially premiered in North America. To date, Everest has been released in a total of 62 markets, with most countries achieving or exceeding Universal's box office targets. Notably, Russia led the way, earning $2.6 million in its opening week.

Being selected to open the 72nd Venice Film Festival in early September contributed to the film winning over audiences with positive reviews. The Dallas Morning News commented, "Everest reminds everyone of how small we are, especially when you watch it in IMAX 3D." The New York Post affirmed that this film was entirely worth the money spent on tickets because of the "chilling and thrilling" impression it created.

Director Baltasar Kormakur revealed that he meticulously studied various documents, including the entire recorded phone call from May 10, 1996, at the Adventure Consultants camp, to create Everest, and that it is considered one of the greatest documentary-style films ever made in Hollywood.

The renowned Australian newspaper, The Northern Star, described the film as "beautiful and emotionally powerful." Accordingly, the participation of top Hollywood stars such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, and Keira Knightley helped Everest surpass expectations for action films and reach a new level.

In Vietnam, the impressions and emotions surrounding Everest resonated with a wide range of audiences, from VJs and poets to film actors and famous singers. Actor Hua Vi Van expressed his feeling upon seeing the helicopter fly overhead, saying, "It felt like I was inside, seeing the towering peaks and the climbers like tiny ants." VJ Tung Leo shared that thanks to Everest, he understood that nature is incredibly "gigantic, fierce, capable of devouring human destiny, but ultimately it loses to one thing: human love and resilience." Poet Nguyen Phong Viet, author of the Vietnamese publishing phenomenon "Going Through Memories," affirmed that Everest is a film that audiences "should all see" because of the idea that "cinema - the seventh art - can penetrate deep into the human psyche."
