To determine the cheapest travel destinations, Kayak looked at data from January to June 2024 on trips to Asia. The list was based on the average round-trip economy airfare and the average price per night for a standard double hotel.
With an average total cost of $1,452, Ho Chi Minh City is the second cheapest city to travel to, after Taipei. Currently, Vietnam Airlines offers direct flights from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City starting from just $660 round trip. This is one of the only direct flights from North America to Southeast Asia, offering significant cost savings for travelers.

Additionally, food and accommodation in Ho Chi Minh City are also very affordable, making the city an ideal destination for those looking to explore on a budget.
Kayak experts also highlighted that Vietnam is the “cheapest country to travel” in Southeast Asia. The third cheapest city to travel to in Asia is Jakarta, Indonesia ($1,478), followed by New Delhi, India ($1,490), Bangkok, Thailand ($1,493), Manila, Philippines ($1,495), Tokyo, Japan ($1,499), and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ($1,505).
With a total cost of 1,546 USD, Hanoi ranked 9th in the list of cities with the cheapest travel costs in Asia, above Osaka, Japan.

Vietnam is one of two countries with two cities appearing on this list, affirming its position in the hearts of tourists who love to travel to Asia. According to Kayak experts, tourists should plan their trip during the fall tourist season (October - November) to save up to 12% of the cost compared to the peak tourist season (May - July).
Kayak experts say: "Vietnam is a country with good, cheap food, great value hotels and a convenient transportation system. Accommodation, from budget to luxury, is much cheaper than in surrounding countries. Domestic business class flights in Vietnam are excellent value and make the experience at the country's crowded airports much more enjoyable, even economy flights are much cheaper than similar routes in the US. Street food in Vietnam is some of the best and cheapest in the region."
With these advantages, it is no surprise that Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are both ranked high in the list of cheapest tourist destinations in Asia. These are also destinations that promise to bring tourists the best experiences in terms of landscape, culture, cuisine, and people when starting their journey to Vietnam.
