This new work will tell the journey of Miguel, a boy who is passionate about melodies but grows up in a family that forbids the presence of music. Miguel always dreams of becoming a famous musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. However, the family's unfair tradition prevents him from proving his talent.
Shaking off the harsh reality, Miguel finds himself in the beautiful and colorful Land of the Dead after a series of mysterious events. During his journey to explore the new land, Miguel meets the “trickster expert” Hector. Together, they create a magical adventure to uncover the untold secrets of Miguel’s family history.
"Mouse House" has just released the first image of the movie
The first image released revealed the film’s pivotal scene. During Día de los Muertos, Mexico’s day of remembrance for the dead, Miguel visits the grave of his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Using his guitar, he creates soulful melodies with a burning desire to break the law. Miguel is suddenly transported to the Land of the Dead to meet his deceased grandparents, who are furious at his disobedience.
Miguel will meet his late grandparents and find a solution to the family's strange law.
Although set on the same Memorial Day holiday in Mexico as 20th Century Fox's 2014 animated film The Book of Life, Coco will be completely different from the content and the all-Latino voice cast. Musician Ernesto de la Cruz will be voiced by Law & Order star Benjamin Bratt. Meanwhile, his companion Hector will be voiced by Gael García Bernal, the actor who just won a Golden Globe for his role in the musical comedy Mozart in the Jungle. Newcomer Anthony Gonzalez will voice the main character Miguel. At the same time, 63-year-old actress Renée Victor will also lend her voice to the film as Miguel's grandmother.
Coco is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Lee Unkrich, famous for blockbusters such as Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2,3,... The Good Dinosaur screenwriter Adrian Molina will write the film's script and co-direct with Lee Unkrich.
Coco: Magical Reunion is scheduled to premiere on November 22, 2017.
