This new work will tell the story of Miguel, a boy who is passionate about music but grows up in a family that forbids it. Miguel dreams of becoming a famous musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. However, his family's restrictive traditions prevent him from showcasing his talent.
Shaking off harsh reality, Miguel finds himself in the beautiful and colorful Land of the Dead after a series of mysterious events. During his exploration of this new land, Miguel meets the "cunning expert" Hector. Together, they embark on a magical adventure to uncover the untold secrets of Miguel's family history.
Disney has just released the first image from the film.
The first images released revealed a pivotal scene in the film. On Día de los Muertos, Mexico's Day of Remembrance for the Dead, Miguel visits the grave of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. He uses his guitar to create poignant melodies, driven by a burning desire to break the forbidden rules. Miguel is suddenly transported to the Land of the Dead to meet his deceased grandparents, who are enraged by his disobedience.
Miguel will meet his deceased grandparents and seek answers to his family's bizarre rule.
Although set during the same Memorial Day holiday in Mexico as 20th Century Fox's animated film The Book of Life (2014), Coco will be completely different, from its plot to its all-Latin voice cast. Musician Ernesto de la Cruz will be voiced by Benjamin Bratt, star of the TV series Law & Order. Meanwhile, his companion Hector will be voiced by Gael García Bernal, the actor who recently won a Golden Globe for his role in the musical comedy Mozart in the Jungle. Newcomer Anthony Gonzalez will voice the main character Miguel. Additionally, 63-year-old actress Renée Victor will lend her voice to Miguel's grandmother.
Coco is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Lee Unkrich, known for masterpieces such as Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2, 3, etc. Adrian Molina, the screenwriter of The Good Dinosaur, will write the script and co-direct with Lee Unkrich.
Coco: A Magical Reunion is scheduled to premiere on November 22, 2017.
