Film beauty queen Huynh Yen Trinh - 'Don't gamble with your life'

05/07/2016

Meeting Huynh Yen Trinh - Miss Cinema 2015 - in real life, she's quite simple, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and ripped jeans, busy at her Home cafe in Ho Chi Minh City.

She personally created the menu and mixed many unique drinks for the cafe. Many people still ask Trinh, "Did you quit acting? Why are you so engrossed in business, staying up late to tally up accounts? It seems a bit 'off' for a beauty queen born in the 1990s."

After winning the title of "Miss Cinema," does Yen Trinh feel more energetic?

I've participated in some beauty pageants before, but usually just for fun, not really because I was still in school and only dabbled in the field. Now, the title of "Miss Cinema" has given me a stepping stone and a big boost in my career, as well as improving my reputation in the showbiz world. I don't have many ambitions for titles or awards, so I'm very satisfied with what I've achieved.

But is it "enough" for what you want?

Not yet, but the title has given me a certain position and respect in the profession. To truly shine, I know I need many factors and a lot of energy, and currently, I'm focusing on business, so perhaps I haven't fully lived up to my title yet.

These days, the pageant scene is flooded with beautiful, long-legged girls born in the 90s, and realistically, winning titles in even minor competitions isn't that difficult. What do you think, Trinh, if you just keep "strolling around," your position will soon be jeopardized?

My entry into filmmaking was a matter of chance and a desire to explore and experiment, not just a hobby. I love everything related to art and beauty, especially beautiful people... So, after beauty pageants, there will be new talents in the entertainment industry, new faces gradually replacing the old ones, and what could be better than that? Because viewers and audiences will be the ones enjoying the freshness of art. As an audience member myself, I also find it boring to always see the same old or outdated beauty queens, models, and models. Especially in the entertainment industry, there's always a need for new and talented faces, and especially for beautiful people... So, for me, everyone has their own place; nothing is immutable, life is a flow, and there's no point in being envious or competitive.

Many people say you're very aloof because you rarely appear at events, why do you keep such a low profile?

I'm very reluctant to attend events, and it wouldn't be wrong to say I'm "stuck-up" or picky about what I do. I only appear at events related to cinema or international events. You might see Trinh standing next to a very famous Hollywood star at an upcoming event.

Currently, I've invested a significant amount of my capital in the coffee shop business, so I need to see it turn a profit before I can feel secure enough to pursue other ventures.

It's not because every time Yen Trinh makes an appearance, she worries about what she's wearing to make it look extravagant and match the designer clothes and million-dollar cars of her colleagues, is it?

The truth is, in the showbiz world, the competition for appearances is immense. And not all beauty queens, actresses, or famous people have the money to wear designer clothes or drive million-dollar cars, so whenever an event comes up, people in the industry frantically borrow or rent clothes to look their most glamorous. But that doesn't mean all of showbiz is like that; if you have good taste and confidence, you'll exude a sophisticated aura wherever you go.

And did the stories in those places make you feel comfortable, or were they rather formal and tiring?

I think about 70% of people attending celebrity events are quite cautious, very humble, and their conversations are mostly polite and social. Everyone tries to make their actions and gestures look good when captured on camera, so they have a chance to appear in online news sites the next day with a glamorous image, rather than ending up on the list of "worst dressed celebrities."

So how can you live true to yourself without offending anyone?

If you want to be true to yourself without offending anyone, you should clearly show your personality from the start when you first meet someone. Because if they accept you for who you are and still want to get to know you and interact with you, it shows that there's no need to be cautious or reserved later on. I don't have many friends, especially in the industry. I'm not used to living superficially or trying to please anyone. I only have a few friends, but they give me comfort and allow me to be myself.

Did Trinh ever think, if she couldn't become an A-list star, she should just get married and be done with it, no need to compete anymore?

I know that achieving the highest position in my profession is a dream and very important for anyone in this field, but for me, it's not the only goal I strive for. Although I'd love to be an A-list star, because A-list status is reserved for truly talented and experienced professionals, not something you can achieve with money. Reaching the top requires a lot of effort, but I always see myself as walking a long, multi-tiered path. When I get tired, I can stop, as long as I don't stop right at the starting point. I only do things when I enjoy the roles I take on, and let time tell about my ranking. As for marriage, that's completely irrelevant to my success or failure. In my life, every path is one I've planned and directed, and of course, I always anticipate the potential pitfalls. They say a woman's life after marriage is like a gamble, but I don't like gambling, so I can't treat my life like a game of chance.

Huynh Yen Trinh has been continuously appearing in the television series "Sunflower" (directed by Tran Canh Don), the film "The Tomboy and the Effeminate Man" (directed by Vo Tan Binh), "To Be Continued 2", and "Fanatic" - a film that will be released in theaters soon.

Before winning the "Miss Cinema 2015" title, Huynh Yen Trinh was the Miss Vung Tau winner.
