Additional information

The Gióng Festival at Phù Đổng Temple is a Battle Festival, initiated and organized by King Lý Công Uẩn during the Lý Dynasty; it takes place from the 7th to the 9th of April in the lunar calendar every year to reenact the heroic battles of Saint Gióng - the son of Phù Đổng village - against foreign invaders from the North.

The festival has been preserved and passed down essentially intact from generation to generation by the people of Phu Dong; it is a folk theater, taking place in a vast space with thousands of main roles played by the people; aiming to educate about the patriotic traditions, national pride, and love of peace of the Vietnamese people.

With its immense contributions, in 2010, the Giong Festival at Phu Dong Temple (Gia Lam district), along with the Giong Festival at Soc Temple (Soc Son district), was inscribed by UNESCO as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
