The largest flower capital in the West

Formed in the late 19th century, nestled poetically along the Tien River, Sa Dec flower village was originally known as Tan Quy Dong flower village - a traditional craft village over a hundred years old. At that time, people in this area grew flowers to decorate for Tet. Gradually, the annual work became the main occupation of households in Tan Quy Dong. From a traditional craft village, Sa Dec flower village has expanded to many different areas, becoming one of the largest flower granaries in the Mekong Delta and the South with more than 2,300 households growing and 2,000 different ornamental flower species on an area of 500 hectares.

From a traditional craft village, Sa Dec flower village has become the ornamental flower capital of the West.

As a native of Dong Thap, Huy Bao (29 years old) had the opportunity to visit Sa Dec flower village when people here were busy with the Tet season. He said: "Usually, before the Lunar New Year is the time when flowers in Sa Dec are at their most beautiful. The garden owners will take care of the most beautiful plants and flowers to prepare for people to sell in Sa Dec city and to transport to other neighboring provinces."

Born and raised in the midst of the beloved fields and gardens, the most impressive thing for Huy Bao is the simple, rustic images of the landscape and people here. Around December, visiting Sa Dec, visitors will witness Sa Dec flower farmers busy in the fields taking care of flowers and ornamental plants to serve the Lunar New Year, the atmosphere is really bustling. For those who have set foot here, watching the image of uncles and aunts pulling water pipes to water the flower trellis, fertilizing the pots, pushing carts of fertilizer... among the myriad of blooming flowers is a truly peaceful scene, worth experiencing.

Currently, the flower village cultivates many varieties of flowers such as diamond chrysanthemum, raspberry chrysanthemum, violet, pink rose, blue rose, ray chrysanthemum, mini dwarf gerbera... The flowers are planted by the people in straight rows on the fields, because due to the geographical characteristics of the flowers here, they are grown on high trellises, below is the water surface brought in from the canals. Every time people take care of the flowers, they have to wade down, and in the flood season, they use boats to weave between the flower beds to take care of them. This is what makes Sa Dec flower village special and impressive.

Preserving the beauty of traditional craft villages

Last year, the economy was difficult, but the local people here still eagerly prepared for the end of the year with an optimistic and positive spirit.

"I haven't had a chance to talk about the glass flower making profession with the uncles and aunts here, but I have a friend who also does the profession. Every time Tet comes, my friend and family members are always busy doing all kinds of big and small things. From taking care of and watering plants, preparing pots, fertilizing, arranging flowers to transport and sell to customers... along with the housework.

In fact, each profession has its own difficulties, especially this year due to the impact of the global economy, the lives of ornamental flower growers have been somewhat affected by increased fertilizer prices and transportation costs. However, they always try to preserve the craft village, maintain the beauty of the ornamental plants and colorful flower pots here to beautify Sa Dec in particular and the Mekong Delta in general," Huy Bao confided.
