Big Hero 6, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, is a 3D superhero film by Walt Disney Animation Studios based on the famous comic book series of the same name from the 90s by Marvel Comics. The setting of the film is the fictional city of San Fransokyo - a unique combination of the names of San Francisco (USA) and Tokyo (Japan). The main character is 14-year-old Hiro Hamada, who has a talent for creating a chubby and adorable robot named Baymax that can help the community. Big Hero 6 was chosen as the opening film of the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 23.

Meanwhile, the closing film on October 31 is a work from the host country Japan: PARASYTE (with a script adapted from a famous Japanese comic book of the early 90s). PARASYTE is directed by veteran Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki (director of Always - Sunset on 3rd Street and The Eternal Zero). This year's Tokyo International Film Festival has a new award category, WOWOW, for the audience to vote for their favorite film.
