The 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) (October 23-31) will open with Disney's animated blockbuster Big Hero 6.

Big Hero 6, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, is a 3D superhero film from Walt Disney Animation Studios based on the popular Marvel Comics comic book series of the same name from the 1990s. The film is set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo – a unique combination of the names of San Francisco (USA) and Tokyo (Japan). The main character is 14-year-old Hiro Hamada, who has a talent for creating the adorable, chubby robot Baymax, capable of helping the community. Big Hero 6 has been selected as the opening film for the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 23rd.

Meanwhile, the closing film on October 31st was a work from the host country, Japan: PARASYTE (adapted from a popular Japanese manga series from the early 1990s). The director of PARASYTE is the veteran Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki (director of Always - Sunset on 3rd Street and The Eternal Zero). This year's Tokyo International Film Festival added a new award category, the WOWOW award, for the audience to vote for their favorite film.
