During their research on the Pacific Ocean as the setting for their film, the director duo Ron Clements and John Musker had the opportunity to meet the people here and among the people they met, there was a conversation that the filmmakers will never forget. Director Clements recalled: “At that time, an elder living on the island of Mo'orea asked us a simple but extremely profound question: “For many years, we have lived in a world where your modern culture has dominated. Is it time for you to try immersing yourself in our cultural space?”. Therefore, the film crew was determined to best represent the culture and people here closer to the public. And after 5 years of serious work, the work about a Polynesian girl going to sea to fulfill her mission with her family and to find herself was born.

It can be said that the uniqueness of the film lies not only in the familiar Disney formula - humorous, lovely but containing many profound lessons, but also through the new character design, attractive music and extremely meaningful message of self-discovery. It seems that in recent years, more and more animated films have taken the image of strong female characters from the Mouse family. That may show that Disney is gradually changing the image of its gentle princesses to a new and more independent image.
