The Japanese government plans to welcome small groups of Asian tourists from Vietnam, China, and other countries.

Japan's tourism industry is planning to welcome its first foreign visitors back in March 2021, when the weather starts to warm up. The target visitors are from Vietnam, Taiwan, and mainland China – countries in Asia that have relatively well controlled Covid-19.

In addition to submitting a negative Covid-19 test result, tourists must submit a detailed travel itinerary and must travel by dedicated bus throughout their visit. Tourist groups must maintain social distancing and avoid crowds at popular tourist destinations; use a tracking app at all times. Furthermore, you need to provide daily updates on your health status.

The Japanese government is planning to open a fully equipped public facility in March, ready for the opening of the Summer Olympics in July. This facility will serve as a monitoring point for the location and health of international travelers.

However, the final decision on plans to welcome international visitors will have to wait until Japan's health authorities paint a more optimistic picture of the domestic epidemic situation, as well as the availability and effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.

Currently, international visitors are only allowed to enter the country if they self-isolate for 14 days, which has reduced the number of tourists. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of international visitors in October decreased by 99% compared to the same period last year, marking the 13th consecutive month of decline.
