Oyster Perpetual: The most expensive Rolex watch in history.

24/05/2014

A Rolex Oyster Perpetual model, manufactured in 1949, recently sold for $1.2 million at an auction organized by Christie's, becoming the most expensive Rolex watch in history.

Designed by artist Marguerite Koch, the watch, crafted from 18-carat gold, depicts a whale and ships on a turbulent sea. It was expected to sell for between $570,000 and $1.13 million; however, an anonymous buyer ultimately bid $1,220,632.

Reportedly, 435 other watches were also put up for auction at this event, including many Rolex models, raising a total of $26.5 million.

According to real estate consultancy Knight Frank, the collectible watch market has grown by approximately 4% over the past year, and by 32% over the past five years. These exceptional timepieces continue to attract the attention of collectors despite stock market volatility and global economic uncertainty.
