Oyster Perpetual: The most expensive Rolex watch in history

24/05/2014

A 1949 Oyster Perpetual watch was recently sold for $1.2 million at an auction held by Christie's, becoming the most expensive Rolex watch in history.

Designed by artist Marguerite Koch, the 18-carat gold watch depicts a whale and a ship on a rough sea. It was expected to sell for between $570,000 and $1.13 million, but an anonymous buyer pushed the final price to $1,220,632.

It is known that in this auction, 435 other watches were also auctioned, including many Rolex models, with a total revenue of up to 26.5 million USD.

According to real estate consultancy Knight Frank, the collectible watch market has grown by about 4% in the past year, and by 32% in the past five years. Special watches continue to attract the attention of “timekeeper” collectors despite stock market volatility and global economic uncertainty.
