The explosion of romantic musical films on screen.

06/09/2019

Over the past three years, the genre of romantic films combined with music has produced many works that have not only become sensations but have also been highly praised by critics for their quality. Let's take a look back at some of the films that have taken the screen by storm recently.

La La Land (2016)

Dubbed "a love song for dreamers," La La Land became a global sensation at the end of 2016. Young director Damien Chazelle created an outdoor "Broadway stage" in the charming city of Los Angeles, where the love story between musician Seb (Ryan Gosling) and young actress Mia (Emma Stone) was the highlight. Songs from the film, such as Another Day of Sun, Someone in the Crowd, and especially City of Stars, became hits, achieving individual success not only with the film itself.

At the 2017 Academy Awards, La La Land won six Oscars, including "Best Actress" for Emma Stone, "Best Director" for Damien Chazelle, and "Best Original Song" for City of Stars. The film also ushered in a new era for romantic films with musical elements.

The Greatest Showman (2017)

Nearly a year after the success of La La Land, Hollywood has another noteworthy film: The Greatest Showman. Based on the true story of PT Barnum (Hugh Jackman), considered the father of the variety show industry, The Greatest Showman features catchy tunes with standout songs like Never Enough, This Is Me, and A Million Dreams.

Besides the romance between PT and the wealthy heiress Charity (Michelle Williams), the film also portrays the romantic love between Phillip (Zac Efron) and Anne (Zendaya) in PT's circus. The Greatest Showman is considered the most outstanding musical film of 2017 and was nominated for a Golden Globe.

A Star Is Born (2018)

As Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, A Star is Born draws viewers into the happy yet tragic love story of the artist couple Jack (Bradley Cooper) and Ally (Lady Gaga). This is the fourth time Hollywood has adapted the A Star is Born script, following three versions in 1937, 1954, and 1976. Released last fall, the film dominated end-of-year film awards and moved audiences with its poignant tale of "artistic love."

A Star is Born earned both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Oscar nominations. Their performance of "Shallow" was incredibly romantic, and the song subsequently won the Oscar for "Best Original Song." "Shallow" also topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a beloved love song for millions of young people for over a year.

Yesterday (2019)

British director Danny Boyle is renowned for his films with unique cinematic language, such as Trainspotting (1996), 28 Days Later (2002), 127 Hours (2010), Steve Jobs (2015), and most famously, Slumdog Millionaire (2009). Returning to the big screen after two years, Danny Boyle presents audiences with a romantic musical film featuring songs by the legendary Beatles: Yesterday.
