This information was provided by Mr. Huynh Quang Hung, Chairman of Phu Quoc City, at an online conference between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the People's Committee of Kien Giang province on September 9th regarding the pilot plan to welcome international tourists to Phu Quoc.
Currently, the city has vaccinated 35% of its population and workforce over 18 years old against Covid-19 and needs another 250,000-300,000 doses. The leader also stated that only with sufficient vaccines in September can the pilot plan to welcome international tourists be guaranteed. The Ministry, in coordination with the provincial Party committee, has proposed to the Ministry of Health and the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control to allocate a separate amount of vaccine to Phu Quoc to vaccinate its residents and workforce.
Minister Nguyen Van Hung requested that at least 90% of Phu Quoc residents be vaccinated to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists. He stated that any vaccine recognized and licensed internationally can be administered, and that the application of technology should be further promoted to facilitate tourism and market reopening.

Since the outbreak began, Phu Quoc has only had 5 confirmed cases (F0), all of whom have recovered, while 50% of close contacts (F1) are currently in quarantine. Disease prevention and control measures are being strictly monitored.
City leaders emphasized that the pandemic should not cause tourism and services to "hibernate" for too long, affecting daily life and society. Phu Quoc is fully prepared to welcome tourists back. The city has a total of 25,000 hotel rooms, including 15,000 five-star rooms, along with many high-end entertainment areas, urban areas, shopping centers, etc. In the first nine months of 2021, Kien Giang welcomed 2.3 million tourists, reaching 21% of the annual plan. However, there were no international tourists, resulting in a revenue loss of approximately 10,000 billion VND.
Additional information
The plan to welcome international tourists to Phu Quoc is expected to start in October 2021, but the timing may be adjusted depending on the actual situation. International visitors to Phu Quoc must have a certificate of full COVID-19 vaccination or a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 recognized by a competent Vietnamese authority. For vaccinated individuals, the second dose must have been administered at least 14 days prior to entry and no more than 12 months prior to entry. For those who have recovered, the time elapsed from hospital discharge to entry must not exceed 12 months. In addition, all visitors must have a negative test result within 72 hours.
International visitors must come from countries/territories with a high level of safety in Covid-19 prevention and control, such as Northeast Asia, Europe, the US, the Middle East, Australia, etc., and enter by air, via charter flights or commercial flights in stages. After arriving at Phu Quoc airport, visitors are taken to accommodation, sightseeing, and participate in all-inclusive tour packages.
