On November 7, information from the Phu Quoc City Party Committee (Kien Giang province) said that the locality is proposing that the People's Committee of Kien Giang province soon have a policy to build Cua Can reservoir to ensure clean water source, especially during the dry and hot months that make the lives of people here face many difficulties.
Accordingly, from Decision 150/QD-TTg dated February 6, 2024 of the Prime Minister approving the general planning project for construction of Phu Quoc City until 2040, it is determined that 5 freshwater reservoirs must be built (Duong Dong, Cua Can, Rach Tram, Rach Ca, Suoi Lon lakes with a capacity of about 27 million m3). However, up to now, the island has only invested in Duong Dong reservoir with a capacity of about 5.8 million m3 and a water plant of 27 thousand m3/day and night.
The locality is proposing that the People's Committee of Kien Giang province soon have a policy to build Cua Can reservoir to ensure clean water source.
Previously, in 2022, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province issued Decision No. 421 approving the socio-economic development plan of Phu Quoc city, in which the Cua Can lake project is one of the important projects in this socio-economic development plan. According to the orientation of the Prime Minister's Plan 633 in 2010, the Cua Can lake area is affirmed to be one of the important links in the development of the northern urban residential cluster. With the goal of forming a new urban - tourist center in Cua Can, this project needs to be prioritized for early investment implementation.
With the information that the Prime Minister has approved the planning, the construction of Cua Can Lake in 2024 will not only solve the problem of clean water shortage but also contribute to creating an attractive experiential tourism space with its wild and peaceful beauty.
According to the report of Phu Quoc City Party Committee, the investment in Cua Can Lake and other lakes is even more urgent when from the beginning of 2024 until now, Phu Quoc City has organized to extinguish 27 fires, with a total area of 300,044 m2 (mainly grassland, shrubs mixed with vines, and regenerated water melaleuca). The Cua Can reservoir project, with an area of 195 hectares and a capacity of 15 million m3 of water, is one of the key projects, in line with the development planning of Phu Quoc City.
Therefore, the construction of Cua Can reservoir is determined to be the necessary water supply source for Phu Quoc.
To solve the problem of Phu Quoc's freshwater depletion due to harsh weather conditions, according to the city's recently announced master plan, the local water supply will come from Duong Dong, Suoi Lon, Cua Can, Rach Tram, and Rach Ca lakes. Lake water will be the main source of water for the city.
It is expected that by 2030, the capacity of Duong Dong water plant will be increased to 45,000 m3/day and night and a new Cua Can lake with a capacity of 10 million m3 will be built in this area. Cua Can lake water plant will be built, with an expected capacity of 50,000 m3/day and night. Therefore, the construction of Cua Can reservoir is determined to be a necessary water supply source for Phu Quoc when this island city experiences many months of drought and prolonged hot weather, making the lives of the people here difficult.
