On November 7th, information from the Phu Quoc City Party Committee (Kien Giang province) indicated that the locality is proposing to the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee to soon approve the construction of the Cua Can water reservoir to ensure a clean water supply, especially during the dry, hot months when the weather is prolonged, causing many difficulties for the lives of the local people.
Accordingly, Decision 150/QD-TTg dated February 6, 2024, of the Prime Minister approving the general planning project for the construction of Phu Quoc City until 2040, stipulates the need to build five freshwater reservoirs (Duong Dong, Cua Can, Rach Tram, Rach Ca, and Suoi Lon reservoirs with a capacity of approximately 27 million m3). However, to date, only the Duong Dong reservoir with a capacity of approximately 5.8 million m3 and a water treatment plant with a capacity of 27,000 m3/day have been invested in on the island.
Local authorities are requesting that the People's Committee of Kien Giang province soon approve the construction of the Cua Can water reservoir to ensure a clean water supply.
Previously, in 2022, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province issued Decision No. 421 approving the socio-economic development plan for Phu Quoc city, in which the Cua Can reservoir project is one of the important projects included in this socio-economic development plan. According to the orientation from the Prime Minister's Planning Decree 633 of 2010, the Cua Can reservoir area is affirmed as one of the important links in the development of the northern urban cluster. With the goal of forming a new urban and tourism center in Cua Can, this project needs to be prioritized for early investment implementation.
Following the Prime Minister's approval of the plan, the commencement of construction of Cua Can Lake in 2024 will not only address the shortage of clean water but also contribute to creating an attractive experiential tourism space with its pristine and peaceful beauty.
According to a report by the Phu Quoc City Party Committee, investment in Cua Can Lake and other reservoirs is becoming increasingly urgent, as since the beginning of 2024, Phu Quoc City has extinguished 27 fires, affecting a total area of 300,044 m2 (mainly grasslands, shrubs mixed with vines, and regenerated mangrove trees). The Cua Can reservoir project, covering 195 hectares with a capacity of 15 million m3 of water, is one of the key projects, consistent with the development plan of Phu Quoc City.
Therefore, the construction of the Cua Can reservoir is determined to be a necessary water source for Phu Quoc.
To address the problem of depleted freshwater resources in Phu Quoc due to harsh weather conditions, according to the city's recently announced master plan, the local water supply will be sourced from Duong Dong, Suoi Lon, Cua Can, Rach Tram, and Rach Ca lakes. Of these, lake water will be the primary water source for the city.
It is projected that by 2030, the capacity of the Duong Dong water treatment plant will be increased to 45,000 m3/day, and a new Cua Can reservoir with a capacity of 10 million m3 will be built in the same area, with a projected capacity of 50,000 m3/day. Therefore, the construction of the Cua Can reservoir is considered a necessary water supply for Phu Quoc, especially during months of prolonged drought and heatwaves that cause significant difficulties for the lives of its residents.
