The musical wizard behind the Minions melodies

20/07/2015

The key to the success of Minions is not only the humorous design of the cute single-celled creatures but also the music with its own unique melody. Just a voice from one of the minions, surely any audience will immediately think of the movie and feel relaxed and full of life.

Imaginative freedom is the key to unlocking this colorful world of sound. Composer Heitor Pereira shares that what he found comfortable when working with the Illumination team at Universal was the freedom to create the sound for MINIONS. “I looked for music that could create colors for the little creatures,” he confided.

Heitor Perera has been a key part of the creative team since Despicable Me. Kyle Balda, one of the two directors behind the film, said that Heitor Perera's music is "as eccentric as the minions themselves."

The director also did not spare praise for the composer and his collaborators, commenting that “in the world, there are probably only 5 people who can do this”. During the process of making the sound, Heitor Perera revealed that everyone tried to sing like the minions. All the parts were strange minion words like “tomato”, “banana” instead of Latin.

“If I sit down and imagine myself holding my wife and kids’ hands and happily going to see the movie, I think that’s the feeling I need. It’s great. It’s great,” Heitor Perera emphasized when talking about the melodies he created for the movie.

CJ CGV Vietnam would like to share with you the production team's thoughts on the process of creating melodies for Minions:

As the most anticipated animated blockbuster of this summer, MINIONS is still the center of attention in many cinemas around the world. As of July 20, the film's box office revenue reached nearly 626 million USD, 8 times higher than its production budget.
