When considering safety, research shows that Japan was the safest country for solo travelers in 2023, partly due to its low crime rate. Switzerland came in second, followed by Slovenia.
But when considering other factors such as length of stay, cost savings, and dining options, Croatia is rated as the best country for solo travelers this year. The country not only boasts a low crime rate but also offers affordable accommodation, numerous restaurants, and a wide range of outdoor activities from national parks to stunning beaches.
Malta came in second overall as the best country for solo travelers, followed by Slovenia. The top 10 also included Portugal, Iceland, Greece, Hungary, Spain, Singapore, and Israel.

When it comes to attractions, Iceland takes the top spot thanks to its large number of interesting places to visit — 583 attractions per 100,000 people. Malta and Italy come in second and third respectively. Meanwhile, Singapore ranks number one in terms of restaurants with 212 options per 100,000 people.
Sri Lanka has some of the cheapest transportation options. In fact, tourists only pay an average of 16 cents for a one-way ticket on public transport across the island nation.
