Tan Son Nhat International Airport has introduced a new change in its check-in process, officially launching a solution using electronic identification, authentication, and biometric recognition on the VNeID application for check-in procedures at Terminal 3.
This is the result of close coordination between the Ho Chi Minh City Police, the National Population Data Center, Department C06 - Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), the Immigration Department - Ministry of Public Security, along with Vietnam Airlines and related units.
No paperwork required, passengers can easily check in by scanning their face via VNeID.
This rollout marks a significant step in Phase 2 of the plan to implement comprehensive digital technology in the civil aviation industry. Passengers can now complete security procedures, check-in, and boarding quickly and conveniently on their mobile phones via VNeID, which integrates biometric (facial) data, gradually replacing the traditional paper-based system.
This not only saves time but also provides maximum comfort for passengers, especially in the context of large airports often facing high passenger traffic.
This is a step in implementing the Joint Plan No. 380/KHPH-BCA-BXD-BTC dated June 27, 2025, between the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Finance, and ACV on the application of full-process digital technology in the civil aviation industry.
For authorities, the application of electronic and biometric identification technology offers significant advantages. This technology enhances the accuracy of information verification, significantly reduces the risk of using forged documents, thereby facilitating stricter passenger control and contributing to aviation security and national safety. Furthermore, unified identification data on VNeID promotes interconnectedness between ministries, departments, and related units, contributing to significant savings in time, manpower, and administrative costs.
The solution helps passengers complete check-in, pass through security, and board the plane using VNeID, which integrates biometric data (face, fingerprint).
To ensure smooth and safe operation during the initial phase of implementation, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department has directed the PC06 and PA08 departments, and the Tan Son Nhat International Airport Police Station to closely coordinate with airport security forces and airlines. From now until August 15th, at least two Ho Chi Minh City Police officers will be stationed at Terminal 3 each day to directly guide people using VNeID to complete check-in procedures at security checkpoints and boarding gates.
In the context of increasing travel demand and increasingly stringent security requirements, the application of biometric technology is a suitable step.
In practice, biometric technology has proven to provide far more accurate identity verification than simply checking documents visually. The application of this technology in the aviation industry – a sector requiring extremely high security standards – is clear evidence of the effectiveness and reliability of identification data in preventing and detecting fraud or the use of forged documents.
Now, instead of having to prepare many different documents, passengers only need a phone with the VNeID app installed to complete almost the entire process, from check-in to boarding.
Currently, the use of VNeID for check-in has been implemented at 7 major airports nationwide, including Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat Terminal 3, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Cam Ranh, Phu Bai, and Cat Bi, applicable to passengers of Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air. According to data updated on July 25th, Vietnam Airlines recorded 14,763 passengers using this solution on 6,555 flights, while Vietjet Air had 10,317 passengers on 3,376 flights, equivalent to an average of 2-3 passengers using VNeID per flight. The C06 Department has set an ambitious goal that by the end of this year, the percentage of people using technology for check-in will reach at least 70% of domestic passengers flying through automated gates, including security checkpoints and boarding gates.

For passenger convenience, there are two ways to check in using VNeID. The first method, for iOS users, is online check-in via the VNeID app. Passengers simply access the VNeID app, select "Other Services," then "Airline Services," and finally "Online Check-in." After agreeing to the terms and sharing data, the system will automatically redirect passengers to the Vietnam Airlines app to complete online check-in and identity verification (eKYC). Note: This feature is currently only available on iOS devices.
Additionally, travelers can use biometrics directly at the airport. With this method, passengers will complete the procedure directly at Vietnam Airlines counters (from counter number 5 to number 10). Afterward, passengers proceed to the security checkpoint to undergo automated facial recognition, completing the security process quickly and accurately.
