After being canceled for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Australia's Vivid Sydney Light Festival – one of the biggest cultural and tourism events of the year – officially opened on the evening of May 27th.

As one of the world's top 10 festivals, Vivid Sydney impresses visitors with its light art displays covering colossal architectural structures and musical performances held in the city's central squares. In 2022, the festival is expected to feature many innovations, offering even more surprises and enjoyment for visitors.

New South Wales Tourism Minister Stuart Ayre said the Vivid Sydney 2022 light festival will be the biggest and brightest event of the season, featuring many "firsts" for Sydney residents and visitors across Australia.

Visitors will be immersed in 22 nights of captivating art performances, 3D light shows, and vibrant live music. In addition, for the first time, the Light Walk will connect 47 art installations, stretching from the Sydney Opera House to Central Station.

The New South Wales government hopes the return of the Vivid Sydney festival will provide a much-needed economic and social boost for the city, reviving the tourism sector and generating revenue for the hospitality and entertainment industries after the two-year Covid-19 crisis.

Festival director Gill Minervini said Vivid Sydney 2022 will tell the story of the “soul of the city,” highlighting creativity and innovation, while affirming Sydney’s friendly, open, and loving attitude towards all people around the world.

Due to the complex situation with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Vivid Sydney Festival has been cancelled for two consecutive years. In 2019, the festival attracted over 2.3 million visitors, including more than 200,000 international tourists and residents from other Australian states, generating AUD 172 million (USD 121 million) in revenue for New South Wales.

This is the 12th year the Vivid Sydney Light Festival has been held. Vivid Sydney aims not only to promote tourism in Sydney but also in many other famous tourist destinations in Australia.
