In 2017, Lao Cai is expected to welcome 2.4 million tourists, while the Northwestern provinces are expected to welcome 10 million tourists by 2020. Regarding the tourist market, the Northwestern provinces aim to exploit Russian and Japanese tourists, southern tourists and tourists in regional links.
Regarding the preparation for the 2017 National Tourism Year of the Northwest, the Tourism Steering Committee of 8 Northwest provinces said that there will be 22 main events, 23 supporting activities and 8 typical products. Accordingly, in October 2016, the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Festival of Northwest ethnic groups will be the kick-off event for the National Tourism Year. This will be followed by a series of cultural, sports and tourism events in the area taking place from June to October 2017.

Typical tourism products of 8 provinces in the region are expected to be invested and exploited to serve the National Tourism Year 2017 such as: Northwest community tourism focusing on building and exploiting typical community tourism products to introduce the beauty of people, culture and lifestyle of the Northwest ethnic communities; "Journey to discover the heritage road of terraced fields - Northwest" tourism; "Highland market" tourism; Spiritual tourism along the Red River; Spiritual tourism along the Da River; "Northwest flower colors" tourism; “Conquering the peak” tourism: Building tourist routes for tourists who want to explore and conquer the peaks of Vietnam (Fansipan - Lao Cai (3,143), Phu Ta Leng - Lai Chau (3,040m), Ky Quan San (Bach Moc Luong Tu) Lao Cai - Lai Chau (3,040 m), Chieu Lau Thi - Ha Giang (2,412 m), combined with experiencing the culture of the ethnic groups in the Northwest.
Introducing the 2016 Lao Cai Provincial Tourism Promotion and Investment Promotion Conference held on May 7th organized by the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, Lao Cai Provincial leaders emphasized that this is an activity to support Lao Cai province in connecting its tourism activities with associations and travel agencies. The conference has the participation of about 500 enterprises, leaders of ministries, branches, experts, domestic and foreign investors. Accordingly, the conference will focus on introducing the results of Lao Cai's investment attraction; priority orientations for attracting investment projects to serve Lao Cai's socio-economic development in 2016-2020; local commitments to support investment and improve the local business environment.
The National Tourism Year is a prestigious and largest tourism event in Vietnam. With the attention of the Government, the Northwest Steering Committee; the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the General Department of Tourism; the advice of the EU Project; the support of the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, the coordination of the Vietnam Travel Association; the promotion coordination of a large number of reporters in the media, tourism activities in the Extended Northwest region will be further improved in both quality and quantity, better meeting the needs of tourists, moving towards building the Northwest region into a unified, attractive and environmentally and socially responsible tourist destination in Vietnam.
