On the morning of January 1, 2025, the Resolution establishing Hue City as a centrally-administered city officially came into effect. Thua Thien Hue Province became Hue City, a centrally-administered city, and the sixth centrally-administered city in Vietnam. The other centrally-administered cities include: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, and Hai Phong.
Despite repeated attempts to achieve the goal of becoming a centrally-governed city, the people and authorities of Hue did not lose heart. They united and worked together to build and develop not only the city but also the entire Thua Thien Hue province. From an ancient land with a rich history and immense cultural heritage, Hue has gradually transformed, donning a new, modern, dynamic, and vibrant image.
General Secretary To Lam affirmed that "Hue deserves to become a centrally-governed city," along with the message "the whole country is for Hue, Hue is for the whole country."
Through continuous efforts, Hue is not only an attractive tourist destination with world-famous scenic spots but also affirms its position as one of Vietnam's major cultural centers. Traditional cultural values are preserved and promoted, harmoniously combined with modern life, creating a unique character for the city.
Hue is not only the pride of the people of Thua Thien Hue province but also a driving force for development in the entire region. The city is gradually improving its infrastructure, enhancing service quality, attracting investment, creating numerous job opportunities, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the whole country. With its immense potential, Hue is on track to become a smart, sustainable, and livable city, worthy of being an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.
The National Assembly assigns the Standing Committee of the National Assembly to decide on the arrangement and establishment of district and commune-level administrative units within Hue City, ensuring that these take effect simultaneously with this resolution. Agencies, organizations, and units whose names are associated with the geographical names of Thua Thien Hue province shall be renamed to operate under the name of Hue City from the date this Resolution takes effect.
Hue becoming a centrally-governed city is an important foundation, creating new momentum and enthusiasm to continue promoting its glorious historical and revolutionary traditions.
The establishment of Hue City will be a driving force for the implementation of approved urban development plans and programs, with specific investment and development directions and plans, aiming to enhance urban quality, promote rapid, strong and sustainable urban economic development, thereby gradually increasing per capita income and other development indicators in the area.
Over the years, in addition to promoting urban development and infrastructure, Hue has also focused on effectively preserving and promoting the heritage of the ancient capital. Many historical sites destroyed by natural disasters and war have been successfully restored and renovated in Hue. The results achieved demonstrate that the preservation and promotion of Hue's cultural heritage has entered a stable and sustainable development phase.
This is also an opportunity to affirm the role and position of regional and national centers in culture, tourism, specialized healthcare, education and training, science and technology.
In particular, the National Tourism Year 2025, themed “Hue – Ancient Capital, New Opportunities,” and the Hue Festival 2025 will be held in Hue. The organization of the National Tourism Year – Hue 2025 is expected to be a crucial boost for the socio-economic development in general and tourism in Thua Thien Hue province in particular, creating conditions to attract investment for development, building new and attractive products, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the province in 2025 and the following years.
With a series of activities and events organized during the National Tourism Year and Hue Festival 2025, Hue expects to attract approximately 4.8 - 5 million tourists, of which international tourists will account for about 38 - 40% of the total; total tourism revenue is expected to reach about 10,800 - 11,200 billion VND.
