Prolonged bad weather has left over 41,000 tourists stranded in Phu Quoc.

On July 12th, Mr. Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, stated that due to bad weather, all ships and ferries transporting passengers from the mainland to and from the islands in the province had to temporarily cease operations from 6:00 AM on July 11th. This resulted in nearly 45,000 tourists being stranded on the islands. Of these, over 41,000 tourists were stranded in Phu Quoc (including 2,154 international tourists).

In light of the situation, the leaders of Phu Quoc City have called on travel companies, restaurants, hotels, etc., to create the most favorable conditions possible to ensure tourists feel secure while stranded on the island.

According to a preliminary report from the Phu Quoc City Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command, over the three days from July 10th to 12th, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms caused the collapse of three houses and four guesthouses, damaged the roofs of 34 houses, and sank three fishing boats at the wharf in Ganh Dau commune.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from July 12-13, strong southwest winds will continue in the southern sea areas, causing rough to very rough seas with wave heights of 2-4 meters. The weather will include showers and thunderstorms, with strong gusts of wind and tornadoes expected during thunderstorms.

Due to forecasts of worsening weather conditions, ferry services to the islands (including Phu Quoc) remain temporarily suspended.
