UK Film Week 2014

05/09/2014

This year's British Film Week, taking place from September 22nd to 28th, will showcase the beautiful country of Scotland, which recently hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last August.

The wonderful musical film “Sunrise in Leith” will open the 2014 UK Film Week with the theme “The Colorful Scotland”. Alongside “Sunrise in Leith”, other outstanding films will be screened including “Glasgow-Style Love”, “The Survivor”, “Another Happy Ending”, and “Shell”. These films, spanning various genres, celebrate the diverse and colorful culture of Scotland.

Based on the popular musical of the same name and featuring a series of pop-folk songs by the band Proclaimers, Dawn in Leith is a critically acclaimed film, achieving a score of 92 out of 100 on the film review website Rotten Tomatoes.

This year's UK Film Week also marks the first time the British Council Vietnam has partnered with the YxineFF online short film festival – a non-profit project supporting young filmmakers – to showcase seven short films by Vietnamese directors. These films will be screened alongside six award-winning short films from Scotland.

On this occasion, the British Council also invited director Paul Welsh to Vietnam to lead two courses on film pitching for promising filmmakers in Vietnam. Paul is the founder of Digicult, an independent film company dedicated to supporting the development of young film talents. He produced the film Skeletons (2010), which was nominated for Best First Film at the 64th British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA 64). In 2013, he co-produced the film Lore, which won the Feature Film Producer of the Year award from the Producers Guild of Australia.

The films will be screened at CGV cinemas in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Free tickets will be distributed at the British Council in both cities, starting September 15th.
