Vietnam drops 7 places in the tourism development index.

The drop in the TTDI ranking is an alarming sign for Vietnam's tourism industry. To improve its position and attract international tourists, Vietnam needs to focus on enhancing the quality of its tourism services.

According to the latest report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024, Vietnam ranks 59th out of 119 destinations in terms of tourism development, a drop of 7 places compared to 2023.

The TTDI is an upgraded version of the World Economic Forum's Tourism Competitiveness Index, published biennially, based on the new context following the Covid-19 pandemic. The WEF began researching and publishing this ranking in 2007. The index is ranked based on five main groups: operating environment, policies and support conditions, infrastructure, drivers of tourism demand, and tourism sustainability.

Vietnam's TTDI score reached 3.96/7, a decrease of 0.14% compared to the total score of 4.1 in 2023. Compared with other countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks behind Singapore (13), Indonesia (22), Malaysia (35) and Thailand (47), but ranks above the Philippines (69), Cambodia (86) and Laos (91).

The lowest-scoring aspect of Vietnam's tourism industry this year is service infrastructure, with a score of 2.2, placing it 80th out of 119.

Vietnam's lowest-ranked index is the socio-economic impact of the tourism industry, with 2.95 points, placing it 115th, near the bottom of the ranking. This index measures the economic and social impact of the industry, such as its contribution to the economy, provision of high-paying jobs, and gender equality in the workforce.

The WEF announced the TTDI to provide another credible scoring tool for stakeholders to assess the progress of tourism development in various countries and to make investment decisions in the tourism sector at a destination.
