Lake Melissani
Lake Melissani is a very popular natural tourist attraction in Kefalonia near Sami, in the Ionian Islands. Bring a waterproof video camera and walk through the narrow gorge into the lake and capture stunning images at sunrise or sunset when the light changes.
Discovered in 1951 by biologist Giannis Petrochilos, this 40-meter wide lake is hidden in a cave in the Ionian Islands. Over time, the ceiling has been partially eroded. Thanks to the sunlight shining down from above, the water in the lake is quite warm. Visitors can also take a boat through natural tunnels into the cave to explore Melissani Lake.
Meteora monastery complex
Meteora is one of the largest and most important monastic complexes in Kalambaka, Greece. It consists of six monasteries, built on natural sandstone columns on the northeastern edge of the Thessaly Plain, near the Peneios River and the Pindus Mountains in Central Greece. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors can not only experience the peaceful countryside but also see the extraordinary scenery of giant rocks and ancient monasteries. Monks came to Meteora in the 14th century and built these monasteries high up in the mountains to escape the distractions of civilization. Some of the monasteries, located 1,300 feet above sea level, are still open and active today.
Nisyros Island
Nisyros Island is different from other Greek islands because it was formed by an active volcano. The island has survived the centuries since the last eruption, transforming the landscape into a stunning natural paradise. You will find idyllic beaches, natural hot springs, craters like Stefanos Crater and crystal clear waters. You can also travel along 40 hiking trails that take in views from the mountains to the once-abandoned village of Emporio. Here you can enjoy stunning views of gorges, deep valleys and sparkling blue seas.
Zante Coast
The Zante coast is famous for its nightlife and beautiful beaches. Travel along the northern coastline of the Ionian Islands and you will find crystal clear waters and a majestic sandstone cliff. You can also take a boat or canoe trip through the Blue Grotto to discover its hidden secrets. Created by natural erosion and reflections from the sun, the lake here glows a beautiful blue. While on the boat, you will see Loggerhead turtles that are native to the Ionian Sea.
Kerkini Lake
This place offers an unforgettable experience to visitors with the image of migratory birds all year round on the waterway stretching to Kerkini Lake. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful scenery when visiting Kerkini Lake, watching water lilies live on the lake surface and the Belasica Mountains in the distance. This place is also home to more than 20,000 red-headed ducks, many white-tailed eagles and grey and white herons. In winter, pelicans move to Kerkini Lake to avoid the cold along with jackals, water buffalo and some amphibians.
