Ly Son is a stunning island district in Quang Ngai province. Although I'd heard about it many times, exploring Ly Son still surprised me with its picturesque scenery, crystal-clear blue waters, and friendly, hospitable people. My three-day trip to Ly Son was filled with many exciting experiences, and here are some essential tips for a truly wonderful trip.
Although I had heard a lot about Ly Son, it still surprised me.
The ideal time to visit Ly Son Island.
For a beach getaway, it's best to visit during the dry season. The most beautiful beach season in Ly Son lasts from April to August each year. The sea is blue and the sun shines brightly on the fine white sand beaches. You can still visit Ly Son during other months of the year, but be sure to check the weather forecast.
Here's how I got to Ly Son Island:
- From Saigon, I flew to Chu Lai airport. However, Chu Lai airport is about 50km from Sa Ky port, so I booked a taxi to the port and stayed overnight to make it easier to catch the ferry the next morning.
- From Sa Ky port, there are many boats to Ly Son Island. We took the Super Bien Dong high-speed ferry both ways, which takes about 45 minutes (a little secret: you can ask your homestay to help you book it).
- The journey from the main island to the smaller island takes only about 15 minutes by speedboat.
- Motorbike rental services are available at homestays on both the Big Island and the Small Island.
The best thing about Ly Son is exploring the roads around the island by motorbike.
What to do and where to go when visiting Ly Son Island?
To make it easier to visualize, you can understand that Ly Son has two main islands: Big Island and Small Island.
The main island will have two main routes:
The western side of the island includes Duc Pagoda, the Mural Road, To Vo Gate, and the volcanic crater.
- Duc Pagoda: a pagoda perched precariously inside a cliff, featuring a statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara facing the sea. Going up to the top reveals a volcanic crater, making for a very beautiful photo opportunity.
- To Vo Gate: a distinctive landmark of Ly Son Island, featuring rock formations that create a gateway-like structure. Standing firmly amidst the sea, its structure is accompanied by the gentle sound of waves.
To Vo Arch - a characteristic landmark of Ly Son Island.
- Mural Road: a place featuring beautiful paintings of the sea, islands, and Ly Son, stretching along the curved embankment.
The remaining arc in the East includes:
- Hang Pagoda: a destination for those who enjoy spiritual tourism. Additionally, on the way down to the pagoda, there's a lamppost overlooking the sea, making for beautiful photo opportunities.
- Hang Cau Cave: a place with rocks formed from volcanic rock, creating extremely unique geological formations.
- Thoi Loi Mountain, the flagpole, and the freshwater lake: These three points are located on the same side and are the most beautiful sunset viewing spots in Ly Son, with crystal-clear seawater.
- Mu Cu Lighthouse: a lighthouse with a white and red color scheme, alongside black rock formations created by volcanic eruptions and the impact of ocean waves.
Be Island is quite small, perfect for those who love a peaceful atmosphere, with attractions such as Bai Ngang beach with its colorful fishing boats, the pier, and the An Binh mural village.
Hang Cau boasts unique geological formations.
