Mount Everest welcomes expedition climbers after more than a year

After more than a year of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mount Everest officially reopened to climbers starting last April. May 11 marked the first group of climbers returning to conquer Everest.

May 11 marked the first group of 38 foreign climbers to conquer Mount Everest since the Nepalese government allowed climbing activities to resume here after a year of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to information from the Nepal Tourism Ministry, in April, some climbers in this expedition had to leave the Everest base camp after showing symptoms of Covid-19 in the context of Nepal dealing with the second wave of the epidemic.

Previously, Nepal had to announce the closure of Mount Everest due to the pandemic outbreak since March 2020, but reopened it during this year's climbing season, which started last April.

Authorities have issued 408 passes, allowing athletes to explore the 8,848.86 m high peak.

In recent days, Nepal has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases. According to data on the Worldometers website, the number of patients in this country is currently 413,111, of which 4,084 have died.
