Moc Chau National Tourist Area covers an area of 206,150 hectares (including the administrative boundaries of Moc Chau and Van Ho districts). It is bordered to the east and southeast by Hoa Binh province; to the west and northwest by Yen Chau district; to the south by Thanh Hoa province and the Lao People's Democratic Republic; and to the north by Phu Yen district.

Receiving recognition as a National Tourist Area has provided a tremendous impetus for Son La province, as well as the two districts of Moc Chau and Van Ho, to continue striving for tourism development. Thanks to these efforts, the local tourism industry is increasingly asserting its position on the world tourism map, demonstrating Son La's worthiness as a noteworthy national tourist destination.

This area boasts 11 nationally recognized cultural heritage sites (including 4 tangible cultural heritage sites and 7 intangible cultural heritage sites).
For two consecutive years (2022 - 2023), Moc Chau National Tourist Area was voted "World's Leading Regional Nature Destination" by the World Travel Awards organization.
The number and scale of accommodation, dining, and shopping facilities meet the requirements to serve over 3 million visitors per year. Currently, Moc Chau National Tourist Area has over 100 licensed domestic tour guides, one tour guide club with 30 members, and one tourist information and guidance team.
