Phu Quy in the North Wind Season

22/02/2025

There are places that just need to be visited once to leave a mark in the heart, and there are also places that make us want to return forever. For Khang - a young man from Tien Giang, Phu Quy is not only a destination, but also a land of memories.

People call him Khang Ocean, because he has a strong passion for the ocean. And among the thousands of waves, Phu Quy is the island he loves the most.

"The first time I set foot on Phu Quy was in 2017, when the island was still wild and idyllic. I was immediately captivated by the crystal clear water, the red lava rocks towering in the middle of the ocean and the warmth of the people here. Since then, I have returned at least once a year. 2025 marks the ninth time I have returned to this beloved island, witnessing its changes over time while still retaining its unique beauty that cannot be found anywhere else," Khang shared.

Khang said: "Many people are afraid of the North wind season because of the big waves, but for me, that is when Phu Quy shows off its wild beauty. The waves are 4-5m high, crashing against the lava cliffs, creating white foam like a majestic ink painting."

In the North of the island, the winds are strong and the waves are constant, while the South of the island is more peaceful, becoming an ideal stopover for locals and tourists who want to enjoy the tranquility of the sea.

Spring is also the time when Phu Quy is bustling with traditional festivals. On the 4th day of Tet, colorful boats will compete in the boat racing festival - a long-standing cultural feature of the islanders. Lion dances and opera performances take place everywhere, bringing a bustling, joyful atmosphere. Khang not only attached to the natural scenery, but also carries in his heart beautiful stories about the people of Phu Quy.

"Once, while I was on my way to collect seashells, my motorbike suddenly broke down. While waiting for repair, a local saw me holding a bag of seashells and led me into his house, gave me a nicer bag of shells, invited me to drink water, and chatted with me like we were old friends. During my stay at the homestay, the host family was not only hospitable but also gave me seafood to take home as gifts. They even told me that the next time I came, the service would be free. It was those honest and generous people that made me love Phu Quy even more," Khang said.

If you intend to visit Phu Quy during the North wind season, be well prepared. The trip will be a bit challenging, especially the big waves on the way to the island. To ensure health throughout the journey, visitors should check the weather forecast before departure. Bringing sunscreen and warm clothes is necessary, because at this time, the wind blows quite cold at night, while the sun is strong during the day.
