Sagrada Familia Metro Station is a metro station on the L2 and L5 lines of the Barcelona Metro. It is located beneath Sagrada Familia Square, directly in front of the Sagrada Familia Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions.
The metro station was designed by Catalan architect Enric Pericent i Roca, who also designed other metro stations in Barcelona, including Diagonal and Passeig de Gràcia. The station's design is inspired by the architecture of Sagrada Familia, with the use of arches and stained glass.
Many people want to capture images of the famous cathedral in their travel videos.
Opened in 1982, this station has since become a vital transport hub in Barcelona. It serves millions of passengers annually and is a popular departure point for tourists visiting the Sagrada Familia.
However, because of the magnificent scenery, many tourists, wanting to capture the moment of their visit, have disregarded the danger and used the subway escalator as content to post on the social media platform TikTok.
Such actions can have serious consequences; escalators can move quickly and unexpectedly, making it easy for visitors to lose their balance and fall. Falling from an escalator can result in serious injuries or even death.
Authorities are concerned that social media "trend-following" is causing train stations to become increasingly crowded and potentially leading to security issues. Using escalators for TikTok videos could be considered a disturbance of public order and may result in fines or even arrest.
In response to this situation, the Sagrada Familia subway station in Barcelona, Spain – the gateway to the cathedral of the same name – has had to put up signs prohibiting video recording to ensure the safety of visitors, according to the New York Post.
In 2023, more than 4.7 million people visited this basilica. Upon completion, the Sagrada Familia will become the tallest church in the world, surpassing Ulm Minster in Germany.
