The Vietnamese passport has just dropped 3 places to 90th in the 2024 ranking of the world's most powerful passports by Henley & Partners - a company that uses data from the International Air Transport Association. This ranking is published twice a year, at the beginning of the first and third quarters.
Ranked 90th, Vietnamese passport holders can enter 51 countries and territories without a visa, or with just an e-visa, visa on arrival, or eTA (electronic travel authorization) out of a total of 227 tourist destinations worldwide. Previously, Vietnamese passport holders were visa-exempt or granted a visa on arrival at 55 destinations.
In Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese passport ranks higher than Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd).

In Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese passport ranks above Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd). Singapore continues to hold the most powerful passport in the world and the region, with its citizens enjoying visa-free access to 195 countries and territories. The Malaysian passport is the second strongest in Southeast Asia with visa-free access to 183 destinations, followed by Brunei with 166. Thailand, a country whose economy relies heavily on tourism, ranks fourth in the region, with visa-free access to its citizens in 82 countries and territories.
This is the third time in nearly two decades that our passport has ranked 90th or lower.
This is the third time in 19 years that Vietnam has ranked 90th or higher on Henley's ranking. Previously, the Vietnamese passport ranked 94th in 2015 and 95th in 2021.
According to the latest Henley ranking, Singapore continues to hold the most powerful passport in the world and the region. Citizens of the island nation enjoy visa-free access to 195 countries and territories. Malaysia follows with visa-free access to 183 destinations, ranking second in Southeast Asia.
The five countries with the lowest-ranked passports are Afghanistan (visa-free access to 26 destinations), Syria (27 destinations), Iraq (31 destinations), Yemen, and Pakistan (33 destinations).
The Henley & Partners rankings draw data from the International Air Transport Association, a large, accurate travel information database published annually since 2005. The Henley Passport Index has been ranking passports of countries and territories since 2006.
