According to the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, the pilot program for implementing biometric check-in procedures (fingerprint scanning, camera-based photography, facial recognition) has concluded. If all goes smoothly, this application will be rolled out across all airports starting in November 2024.
Previously, with the approval of the Ministry of Transport, from August 2nd, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam officially implemented the use of Level 2 Electronic Identification Accounts (VNeID) for passengers on domestic flights at all airports nationwide.
The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has officially launched the use of Level 2 Electronic Identification Accounts (VNeID) for air passengers.
The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority requires agencies and units to implement the use of level 2 electronic identification accounts for passengers on domestic flights (for Vietnamese citizens, VNeID is equivalent to a citizen identification card; for foreigners, VNeID is equivalent to a passport or other valid international travel document).
As airport operators, representatives from Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport stated that the pilot program using level 2 electronic identification accounts on the VneID application facilitates airport management, minimizes security risks, saves procedural time, and enhances operational efficiency by applying digital technology to airport operations.
It is understood that applying this method makes passenger control and procedures at the airport faster and more convenient.
On the airlines' side, affirming that the VNeID application is accepted as a document for passengers to check in for flights, a representative from Vietnam Airlines stated that this implementation helps to add a convenient document for passengers, minimizing inconvenience for those who forget or lose their identification documents, and providing peace of mind for passengers in the context of increasingly developing, convenient, and customer-oriented air travel, especially domestic air travel.
At the Ministry of Transport's conference on key tasks for the remaining months of 2023 on October 11th, Mr. Tran Bao Ngoc, Director of the Transport Department, stated that in the first three quarters of 2023, transport activities continued to thrive. Passenger transport volume recorded positive signs across all five sectors.
Specifically, in the first nine months of 2023, passenger transport volume reached over 3,400 million passengers, an increase of more than 13% compared to the same period in 2022.
Compared to the same period in 2022, passenger transport by rail recorded the highest increase (over 44%), followed by passenger transport by sea (nearly 43%), air transport (approximately 22%), and passenger transport by road (nearly 24%).
In September 2023 alone, passenger transport is estimated to have reached nearly 400 million passengers, an increase of nearly 6% compared to the same period last year.
