On July 8th, images promoting a Hue tour featuring famous landmarks in the ancient capital city appeared on Facebook, but they used inaccurate imagery. Specifically, the promotion included an image of the Forbidden City (in China) but captioned it as "Dai Noi" (Imperial Citadel). This posting and mislabeling of the image sparked numerous complaints.
Previously, the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center received information regarding the appearance of misleading promotional images of the Hue Imperial Citadel on a tour advertising page run by a tour guide named Phuong N. - from HT Travel Company (headquartered in Hue City, Thua Thien Hue province). The posting of these inaccurate promotional images caused public outrage and misled tourists.
The image is believed to spread misinformation when it uses an incorrect source.
According to the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center, after verifying the information, the unit found that this was a tour advertisement page created by an individual and quickly contacted the person who posted the information directly to discuss the matter.
After receiving feedback from authorities, the website administrator admitted their mistake and was instructed to retract and remove all information posted on the websites. The use of inaccurate images could mislead tourists about tourist destinations or travel experiences, damaging the reputation of Vietnam's tourism industry. It could also negatively impact the country's image and reputation in the eyes of international tourists.
The Hue Ancient Citadel Conservation Center stated that, following this incident, they also requested that travel agencies be extremely cautious about the images and content used in their promotional programs, ensuring accuracy. Furthermore, relevant authorities need to strengthen the management of tourism promotional information to prevent similar situations from recurring.
The Hue Imperial Citadel is a unique historical and cultural complex of Vietnam, located in Hue City. It served as the capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. The Hue Imperial Citadel was built to house the residences, offices, and royal activities of the Nguyen emperors. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It is one of Vietnam's most important cultural heritage sites and a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
